Question, sample and how items were counted
- Question
- Where are people hurt in Minnesota crashes, relative to residents and law offices?
- Sample
- All 87 counties in five editions of Minnesota Motor Vehicle Crash Facts, 2019 to 2023.
- Who is included
- Every county. Rate rankings use counties with at least 10,000 residents 15 and older. No lawyer or firm is scored.
- Method
- A script parses each edition's county table, checks that crash types add up on every row, and sums the five years. Yearly deaths match the state's overview table. Law-office counts come from Census business data used in our earlier county study and include offices of every kind.
Limitations
- Crashes are counted where they happened, so visitors and highways raise some counties.
- This covers vehicle crashes only, not other kinds of injury.
- Law-office counts include every kind of law office.
What we could not collect
Injury verdicts and settlements
Most settlements are private, and we did not get court records in bulk.
